While
on assignment for several days in Milwaukee, I recalled that I had
wondered
where in the National Cemetery my great grand uncles might be buried.
I went to Wood, WI. Wood, for those who might not know, is a federal enclave between West Allis and Milwaukee. It sits on a bluff overlooking Milwaukee County Stadium and the national cemetery is visible from the I-90/94 freeway. At the Cemetery office there is a "locator" computer. You input the names and it produces a map (like above). Confusion came when I noticed that the grave site number (197) was the same for both men. Checking with the office, the clerk pulled the records and indeed, both men are buried in a common grave with a single, family stone. The clerk said that, according to the record, the burial was done at Arthur's request and there are several other common grave burials of brothers in the cemetery. The record also had a copy of the inscription, kept in event that the stone is destroyed or defaced. |
