ADVENT
(A Family Worship)

Second Sunday of Advent
December 9, 2012

Father: Let's start by singing "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus." #196

Sing:
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Child: We will relight the first candle for the promise God made to His people and our hope for all time to come. (lights 1st candle)

Child: Last week we talked about changing and starting to live right.

Mother: Yes, we need to do some preparing before we can accept the birth of Christ in our hearts.

Father: The prophet Isaiah said, "A voice cries: 'In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain and hill be made low, the uneven places shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." (Isaiah 40: 3-5)

Child: Let us light the second candle for preparation.

Child: Wasn't there a man who came before Jesus; someone who lived in the wilderness?

Mother: Yes, that was John, the Baptist, who went around telling all who would hear to repent.

Child: What does that mean?

Father: That means to be very sorry for the wrong things you've done.

Child: He also said that we should share and be fair.

Child: Some thought he was the Christ.

Mother: Mary was another person who needed to do some preparing. When the angel told her that she was to have a baby that would be God's son, she needed to accept that and be willing to do what God wanted.

Child: We can try to do good things every day.

Child: Yes, we can share with others and each other and be kind to each other.

Father: Let's sing "There's a Voice in the Wilderness Crying." (in older hymnal #362)

All Sing
There's a voice in the wilderness crying,
A call from the ways untrod;
Prepare in the desert a highway,
A highway for our God;
The valleys shall be exalted,
The lofty hills brought low.
Make straight all the crooked places
Where the Lord our God may go!

Revise to suit your families. Please note that songs/hymns listed may be spoken instead of sung.
